the cause of the problem was low compression in two cylinders; I guess that O2 sensor was just flooded with unburned fuel. after rebuilding the engine the sensor works fine.

Just tacking on to this - I just got done installing a PLM Ram header (modified to fit the chassis), and now I have P1172 & P2A00 error codes - modding the exhaust is the only change. O2 sensor was new genuine Denso 234-9066 (TSX version, I need the longer harness) 1K miles prior to this current work.
