Vtec window - mBar

Post by mikeyinid »

I've been trying to wrap my head around this. Low engagement is 4600, high is 5500.
I have my RPM's in the VTEC window set to:
2000 3000 4300 6000 7200

Corresponding mBar:
850 850 850 600 400

Obviously my goal is to only hit low engagement at WOT. Watching mBar it seems to never peaks above 1k, but does hit 9xx at WOT. When I cross the low threshold less than WOT, VTEC engages for a split second then drops off til high engagement. I know my mBar values are the issue.

Just trying to get rid of that little tick when crossing 4600 not WOT. Any advice? That is the only issue I'm having.

I guess my question is really just this; is it over the target mBar or under that makes the lower engagement occur? I want it to engage at WOT, not just cruising.

"If these were set to 500 mBar then it would use the higher engagement below 500mBar (At lower load) and lower engagement above 500mBar (At higher load)."
I may be a little slow, but I can't grasp this..

My thought is I need to play around with the 3 lower RPM mBar values. If over the target it uses the low and under it uses the high, maybe raise the 850 to 900 and start there....I think that's what the help page is saying.

Check what mBar you have at WOT, but depends on the engine the mBar can be high at lower rpm not just at WOT. You can change the rpm values in the VTEC window too so 2000-3000 not needed when you have 4600 and 5500 VTEC switching point.
It can be something like this:
4000 5000 5400 5600 6000
950 950 950 400 400

Thank you for the response. This makes sense.

I got my exhaust on today and was messing around with different settings and kept getting a check engine light for the vtec solenoid when I shifted and stayed in vtec no matter where I had it set. It was fine if I hit vtec in one gear but not when I stayed in it through shifts or hit it through multiple gears.. I have a new solenoid I'm going to put on tomorrow hopefully that fixes my issue.

Yes, datalogging will be key to finding the right mBar crossover for WOT. Keep in mind VTEC engaging can affect manifold pressure as well.

Got vtec squared away, no more CEL, and ran into a new issue
While installing my SRI I cleaned the throttle body. In doing so I pushed the butterfly open to clean the backside. After getting everything put back together my idle is high, and I get surges when stopping and when shifting. I've tried everything I've found on the internet to fix it and nothing works. Bidirectional scanner to reset TPS, idle relearn, same result. I ordered a new OEM TB that will be here Thursday, once I get that squared away I'll start taking logs and go from there. I do plan on having it dyno tuned but I have a few more things I want to get done first. Just trying to get a drivable starting point.

Check if you have any vacuum leak or not. That can cause high idle too.
